What is a Turbofan Jet Engine?

Also known as a fanjet, the turbofan is a very popular type of jet engine that pulls in the air by the use of a turbine driving the internal fans, hence the name of the engine.

A typical turbofan engine has a fan at the front to help pull in the air through a low pressure, then a high pressure compressor. The air is then sent into the combustion chamber where it is mixed with the jet fuel and ignited.

The mixture is then sent through another high pressure turbine, followed by a low pressure turbine where it produces the thrust out the back of the engine through the nozzle.

The turbofan generates more thrust than a standard jet engine with many commercial versions using the high bypass version while military aircraft tend to use the low bypass version in part because afterburners can be used on the low bypass versions which create even more speed.
