Its History
The Antonov An-225 Mriya is the world’s largest aircraft. It is capable of carrying over-sized objects that no other aircraft built on earth can carry. It made its debut flight in early 1988 and entered service in 1989. In its first flight it flew for seventy five minutes. It was designed by the Antonov design bureau in the Ukraine.
The Antonov An-225 can carry 550,000 lbs in the interior and 440,000 lbs on the upper fuselage. Due to its immense weight it requires about six turbofan engines to keep it aloft.
The Antonov An-225 was designed with the purpose of helping the Soviet space program as a shuttle carrier aircraft. The Antonov design bureau crafted the plans of building the aircraft in the early 1980s but they were unsuccessful in their attempts until December 21st of 1988. They ended up just building one An-225 with plans to build several other An-225s but the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 hampered these plans and consequently the space program was cancelled.
A second of such aircraft was partly built but it was not finished. The only Antonov An-225 that was built proved too expensive to operate and thus the engines were removed. The plane’s body was placed in storage together with the second similar one that was partly built. A need for the transportation of heavy equipments by air in the year 2000 led to the comeback of the Antonov An-225 into service.
The years that followed then saw a sharp demand for the aircraft which prompted its designers to try to build the second one. Unfortunately the demand for the aircraft quickly fell in 2008 coupled with financial meltdown of the same year. The plans to build the second aircraft were again halted.
The Antonov An-225 Specifications
The plane requires six turbofan engines in total to lift it and keep it aloft due to its big weight. It has 32 wheels in its landing system. Its maximum total weight is 640 tones equivalent to 1,410,000 lbs.
The Antonov An-225 Aircraft is the only plane in history that has ever airlifted the heaviest cargo. It airlifted a gas generator for a power plant in Armenia that was 53.2 feet long, 14 feet wide and weighed 416,900 lbs.
The Antonov An-225 is still being used even today as many nations always contract it whenever they need its services. It has really helped in the transportation of very big equipments like generators, turbine blades and war tanks providing easy transportation of these equipments across the continents.
The cost of operating it is so huge that it is not economically good for commercial uses. The plane is generally ideal for special projects like for the space shuttle program for which it was originally intended for. It could also be ideal for the military as it can be used to carry war tanks to distant places. The six turbofan engines it has make it to consume a lot of fuel contributing to high operational costs that is associated with the aircraft.
